“Muslim women are opressed with no voice and their scarf is a symbol of opression so I’d be uncomfortable talking to them and whatnot”

11 11 2007

That’s the attitude I’ve been faced with a little bit recently … seeing as I’m not a muslim woman I need some help from my sisters fastish please!! Please please rebuke the aforementioned quote bigtime because when I tried to argue otherwise it didn’t work very well :P and it doesn’t help that I’m a guy in a boys school either…

Assalamualaikum,

ehm not talking to us would alienate us as well as oppress us?? XD

oh and WE’RE NOT OPRESSED
maybe this guy thinks we dont have a voice because hes refusing to listen to it *: P* cos we make him uncomfortable. awww… poor thing. =_=

has he heard of sarah joseph???? does she look opressed to you???

and why would a ”free” non Muslim woman convert to Islam- what, opression suddenly seemed appealing to her? women dont convert to Islam because they think, ‘hmmm hummm i need a religion that opresses me, takes away my equality, my dignity and all my rights… omg, ISLAM! perfect!’ -_-” for goodness’ sake… if it was like that id have left Islam years ago … give us all a little more credit than that, we have the power of intellectual thought too ya know 0_0
in fact let me elaborate that further *no no im drawing a conclusion here*: his statement, and any one else who agrees, insinuates that women who cover cant think for themselves thereby directly challenging (if not downright insulting) the intellect of Muslim women and women who convert to Islam and decide to wear the Hijaab. and oh my God. he doesnt want to go there. seriously.

i’ll come back with more later, ive got so much homework and my mind has gone blank

please tell him that i, a Muslim hijaabi woman (?? XD), said WE’RE NOT OPPRESSED OKAY?!!!!!!!!!!!! if i was oppressed id sit at home and sew all day instead of getting an education
thanks v much

symbol of oppression indeed XD its a symbol of ‘get your eyes off me, perv’ for me… but whatever XD

AOA
Where does oppression come from?
From a piece of cloth covering the head?
So if above statement is true than if I wear my hat than I will feel oppressed?
Not true.
Take care

walaikumusalam

I think I can hear it too … thanks for the post by the way- It’s a nice bit of encouragement :D

I’d say it’s because of the workload from school etc but to be honest I’ve let myself think I’ve been overwhelmed, when its actually not much different to last year, alhamdulillah!

Hopefully I’ll stop being so lazy! Hoping to start posting again =)

Salamz,

just to add to this slightly dying topic XD a friend and i got into a rather heated conversation about oppression and the Hijaab the other day and after i asked him, ‘do i honestly look or sound opressed to you??’ we unanimously concluded that Hijaabis are usually the most confident, least oppressed ones out there : P ironic really but there you go

now martin luther king is giving me the puppy-dog-eyed treatment.
woe is me, and my lack of commitment to revision – i must procrastinate no more! XD
.xXx.
